of steam and balls
For nic's farewell we went to this steamboat place near my place which is reputably quite good..It's been a long time since I've eaten steamboat... The only previous time was in Melbourne, where the definition of steamboat is boiling soup in a rice cooker with lots of seafood you can find in Vic market. Then usually you'll get an apartment filled with water vapor and prawn smell. But I digress.

So 11 of us went to this shop, once again proudly wearing our Motorola batik/Hawaiian shirt. The food was not bad, and the company terrific...

P1300076
It's one of those steamboats you can grill stuff at the sides..can anyone find a pig head in the soup?

I still prefer having steamboat in Melbourne's cold weather.. There, you don't even sweat. But I was sweating like a pig (not that pigs sweat, but you get the point.. ) while cooking all the nice food.

After the meal, a few of us went for snooker. If you don't already know, I was a snooker addict back in Form 5 and college days. As a friend would put it, I single handedly made the snooker centres survive the economy crisis. I don't think that's true though..hahaha...

I still remember our weekly round of pool before Mr Lee's Physics tuition. That time my kakis was Ivan, Chok, Indera.. Then after form 5 Robin got sucked into the pool of madness, and became a regular snooker centre crawler..hahah.. In college, roommate fadhil was a constant challenger.. I still remember him always challenging me for a round of snooker at ungodly hours, and how I would kiasu-ing-ly accept the challenge, and beat the crap out of his sorry ass.. LOL.. But anyways, I think our scores were even when we left college.. too baddd.. Well, Melbourne did my snooker passion no good, and I have since retired from being a professional mediocre-but-act-professional snooker player.

That was a heck of a background.. hhehehe.. anyways I think I've lost my touch.. can't even pocket simple balls, and the only consolation is that I beat the crap out of jc and pm. hehehe

whoa!! I still need to work tomorrow! must sleep!! zzz...

an empty space
watched another movie today, The Tin Mine. A Thai movie which is too cliche for my liking. It has its funny moments though. Funny thing is, there's just 3 people in the cinema watching the movie. Me, housemate, and his colleague. Well, it's Monday after all..

I almost cried watching this...

tick tock , tick tock
time for the weekly update..

was quite a quiet week in fact. watched a movie on Friday, at the new GSC in Queensbay Mall. It was a Friday night, and the look on the cashiers' faces said it all.. business no good! ahha.. should have captured their bored-to-my-bones look on camera but too bad I didn't bring one..

We watched Blood Diamond, which tells of the story of a mercenary/smuggler (Leo Di Caprio) and a fisherman who have different histories and circumstances but their fate becomes joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond, that could transform both their lives. The story is set against the backdrop of the chaos and civil war that enveloped 1990s Sierra Leone, a war which was partly funded by the smuggling of diamonds out of the country. I thought the movie was rather thought provoking, particularly a part where a character says, "I believe, Mr Archer, that all men are inherently good. What do you think Mr Archer?", and Mr Archer(Di Caprio) responds, "I don't think so. I believe men are just.. men". whuuooooo.. cheem rite? hahhhhahaha.. Well I think it is a good movie which tells of trust, friendship and most of all, sacrifice. A 9.5 out of 10. I also thought it was a surprisingly violent movie to be passed by the Censorship Board, although it comes with an 18PL rating. But I do think they cut out a love scene.. hahaa.. never mind that..

Then me and housemate had lunch at a friend's house on Sat. Went to Prangin Mall after that, but we were too full after the lunch to have any mood for shopping. At night, went to the pasar malam and bought some DVDs. Damn.. I don't know what it is with dvd sellers but they can breathe u a lie as matter-of-factly as the newscaster presenting the evening news on tv. We were cheated 3 times and feeling not happy we went to exchange the DVDs (which were unwatchable, or had no subtitles for a Jap anime) 3 times.

Gonna go watch another movie now..

the last,and the best
I woke up early Saturday morning, and took a 7.30am bus to KL. A tiring 4.5 hour journey where I couldn't make myself go to sleep. It always happen that I can't sleep if I want to and vice versa.. Well,I reached KL about 12pm and took an LRT to Kelana Jaya. As I was about to step out of the LRT, I saw a familiar face.. and..horror of horrors.. my boss was there!! no sh*t!!! we had a short exchange of "oh so surprise to see you" and "what the godzilla are you doing here" and boring stuff like that then the LRT door closed.. still a bit shocked to see him coz he was still in the office when I left at 5.30 yesterday. Hahah..

Well, anyways, met up with my sis and off we went shopping in the curve and ikea and tesco. didn't do much at night except watch TV at home.. have not been watching TV for a long long time so it was quite an enriching experience :p american idol.. bahh..

P1210064

On Sunday, poor sister had to work.. no kidding. So I took an LRT to KLCC myself and did some shopping at Isetan, which was having a 3 day mega sale. Wanted to meet up wif yanying but turn out she was in Times Square. After that,I went to Sentral and ph picked me up, for the 4th OCF gathering in Bangsar. It was raining tigers and giraffes when we got there, so we were quite soaked by the time we got into the restaurant. The food was quite good, especially the signature xiao long bao which had a juicy interior. After the dinner, the 14 of us went to Outback, a drinking hole near (or in?) Bangsar Village, where more catching up with each other was done.. very thrilled to meet up with the OCFers.. considering I've not been going to church for a long long time.

Monday was definitely the highlight of the trip.. I went to get my visa electron card at BSN.. which was actually why I came down this weekend..heheh.. Now I have a credit card! yeah people.. my life is quite boring. like i said before.

I then took the LRT to chee cheong kai. yan ying was on time for the appointment, although I was 10 minutes earlier..hehe. I can't believe we are meeting again after 3 years.. The meeting at the airport 3 years ago is still fresh in my mind. What a strange and unique relationship we have, and how things have turn out to be that I could never have foreseen 6 years ago.. surreal it was indeed the moment I saw her. We went for breakfast in chee cheong kai.. which turn out to be a 2 hour brunch and catching up with each other. For all that I've done to her, I still could not believe she's willing to entertain me, come down all the way from wangsa maju to see me and even 3 yrs ago to the airport to send me off.. she teaches me the meaning of real friendship at what a timely moment. Indeed this made my trip to KL so much more meaningful this time around, if not the best.

After another 4 hours of bus ride, I'm back to the island again.. and for another day of work tomorrow..

another passing week
day in, day out, work seems to get a bit routine (probably because I have been slacking :p). Days seem to be dancing past in a fleeting blaze of lights.. and counting the days to my last day at work is getting a bit scary. This week was cat's (a fellow trainee) final week with us, because she wants to enjoy one month of holiday before getting back to school. It makes me think, how accustomed I have become of the daily spam we send ourselves, breakfast, lunch and tea time we spend with mindless chatter, and how closely we have bonded as a group of trainees.

Definitely a different experience from my last training, where there was no computer, working in a hot humid workshop and not really much fellow trainees.

OK, so how was my week? Thursday, after work we went straight to BJ to 'buy shoe'. hahaha.. end up no one bought anything and we proceeded to Queensbay Mall. We planned to have Johnny's steamboat but observation of the menu revealed that it wasn't such a wise choice--- wat the fish.. four small prawns for a four person set??!? If they can't even put up a decent and attractive picture in the menu, how do they expect to provide better food for real customers?

We ended up going to Kenny Rogers to celebrate, or rather, farewell cat. everyone ordered the quarter chicken meal and it was a pretty decent one.. After that we just walked around the mall, attracting a lot of attention. Why? Because we had on our pretty Hawaiian or batik or watever-you-want-to-call-it uniform. It sure is a pretty funny sight when 10+ people are walking around aimlessly with the most astoundingly eye-catching uniform I've ever seen. A shopkeeper even had the cheek to ask us whether we are from a restaurant *sweat*

Friday lunch, we followed cat's colleagues to the airport to have lunch at Nandos. Yes. The airport. hahahaha.. wat to do.. our office is near the airport, so near that you could see planes taking off every few minutes. I think when it comes to food these few days, I've really dug a hole in my pockets..

Friday night, went to Q-Mall again.. this time with housemate's colleagues. Just had dinner there, walk around and had a drink at coffee bean..

And I'm going off to KL in a few hours time. Probably my last trip to KL this holidays. Enjoy your weekends people..

searching for myself
Recently an undersea earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan, and a substantial portion of the fiber optic cable linking Asia Pacific's communication lines were ripped apart and swallowed by a massive and mindblowingly fugly Kraken sea monster. The incident triggered worldwide pandemonium as internet lines, the heartbeat of 21st century business, was severely affected. My workplace was in the same predicament as well, with no internet, nothing could be done, especially if you're a multinational company. I imagined how it was like 10 years ago, when the internet wasn't a big thing. How it would be impossible to book a free air asia ticket. How it would take 2 weeks for your christmas card to arrive. How you would have to plough through tonnes of literature to find that article you wanted for your essay. gruesome image indeed.. don't you think?

With my superfast and unlimited internet connection currently, I could surf porn like there's no tomorrow. do things I couldn't or was too stingy to do with the preposterously priced internet courtesy of college square.

Now I could even see my house on the internet!!

my house in kuching copy

I never realized that my house is the only one with a red roof in my row. hahaahaha.. ok I know I know.. my life is excruciatingly boring..

Well, let's go a little further..

penang house copy large

Honestly, I had trouble finding it because it didn't look half a bit like my apartment. The reason:

wah lao yeh.. my apartment still under construction?? Obviously this satellite image is in need of updating...

the romantic city
PC120329

It's Monday night, and I'm feeling slightly homesick. Penang's not so bad, but Kuching is on my mind..

P1160058

How I wish I had my warm bed with a 5 inch mattress instead of the ONE INCH mattress I have now. Heck, I might as well just sleep on the floor.

P2220078

How I wish I had my mum's CLK to drive. The trusted cute little kancil.. And people can't believe that I drive such a car considering my supposedly long legs. wtfish.. Just in case you didn't know, there's a lever underneath the seat that's used for adjusting it...

P2220039

No, I don't miss the cats. Actually, I think all the cats in Kuching either died of starvation or are on the brink of extinction due recreational shooting activities. muaahhahaha..

With or without cats, Kuching is one of the most delightful cities in Malaysia, and probably the most romantic. hahaha.. I didn't even realize that.. But come to think of it.. it IS romantic in Kuching. We got our local 'gondolas' hey..

Days are too busy, words are too few, hours are too fast, seconds are a quik'ning gush
Here comes my weekly update.

The week was rather okay considering I had made major progress on the project assigned to me. Besides that, the trainee makan escapades are becoming more incredulous (1 hour breakfast and high tea?!?!) as the new batch of trainees came in.

Monday passed,Tuesday came, Wednesday was gone, Thursday too, and TGIF!! My carpool buddy 'ffk-ed' me and my housemate at the last minute on Friday evening and I had to hitch a ride with JC on a motorbike. Whew.. that was only my 2nd time being a pillion rider. He was talking to me almost non-stop on the bike and I'm like.. *concentrate..concentrate..look at the road man..* Thankfully I didn't get my limbs torn and shredded by a 5 ton truck as we went through the bayan lepas industrial zone.

Reaching home, I had 5 minutes to grab my bag and then off we went to Gurney Plaza with the bunch of trainees. A friend introduced us to the celebrity gym there and we were there to go for the free trial. Had to go through a boring introduction by the staff there while we pretended to be interested. I must say the gym there is the best I've ever seen although I'm certainly no expert in gyms.. hahaha.. First time I've been to gym since.. err.. 2-3 months i think. Didn't expect to be going to gym in Malaysia really..:p

After gym, we went to the food court near ping hua school to have our dinner/supper. Tried curry noodle (which didn't impress) and char koay kak. Interestingly, Kuching people call it just char koay. But a penangite tells me that calling it char koay will make it get confused with char koay teow. Me: *speechless*.. (kak means 'squarish' in Hokkien, for the benefit of non-Hokkien speaking people, which by the way, is the preferred dialect of smart people like me..hahaha) .. well the char koay didn't impress either, the texture was too soft for my liking.. sorry but didn't take pictures la..

I reached home around 1am coz I was dropped last.. Didn't sleep till about 3, then woke up this morning at 7 to play basketball at USM. It was fun playing with my housemate's colleagues. But I got my spectacles ruined.. thankfully it's my old one. After basketball we went for breakfast at a food court called supertanker. Breakfast over, we went to bukit jambul by bus. Bought a few things there which I'm quite happy about..hahaha..

Ok.. that's a very fast weekend there.. as is always the case. Anyways, I managed to book SIX free tickets from AirAsia's free 1 million tickets giveaway. Only the tax surcharge applied.. sadly all the bookings are not for me. So to those that are applicable, there's still a lot of free tickets to be grabbed.. one advice though... have a cup of cold water beside you so you can have a drink to calm down and prevent yourself from slamming your knuckle into your laptop's lcd.. coz, trust me, you'll point your cursor on the 'reload' button for a looonnggg longggg time.. :)

Monday Blues
I just felt like yesterday that I stepped foot off the plane from Melbourne. And it is now one month into my industrial training, with another 5 weeks to go. I thought I would not like Penang, being away from family and friends in Kuching, at a time where I’m supposed to be spending with them.

In the one month I’ve been here, I have been to KL on two occasions, getting the feeling of what it is like to ‘balik kampong’, call me jakun or sakai or whatever, because us Kuching people don’t really experience the mass exodus every single holiday season. (Not because we live on stilt houses, but because we’re smarter than the rest of you west msian people!! Hahhhhhhhahahah… ) I’ve also come to know my colleagues and other trainees, and realize that I’ll miss them once I don’t work anymore. I have started to know how to swim a little. I start learning about how to deal with my emotions at work. I learn to see the line between treating colleagues as friends and treating them with respect. I take the public bus, which is so low class compared to the trams in Melbourne, but realize that it is just an adjustment that everyone can make. I see the routine of working life, but realize in the midst of the corporate jungle there is always room for optimism. I look for something that I can complain about, but I think God has a way of showing me so much that I can be thankful for in the one month I’ve been here. I guess Penang is not so bad after all.

1st week of the year
This week has been rather relaxing at work because everyone is recovering from the 4 day weekend. So Wednesday is like, recovery day. Thursday only get back to serious work. Friday will be like productivity management day, which is another way of saying that everybody is slacking or finding opportunity to slack. Hahaha..

Anyways, here’s my typical day at work:

8am- Reach my cubicle, turn on my huge desktop computer. Which has a big ass CRT monitor. it doesn’t help that my colleagues have a laptop PLUS an LCD monitor which they use as a desktop extension.

9am- My colleagues start coming in. The rest of the trainees (around 8-10 of us) go down to cafeteria to have breakfast. Usually we sit there for around half an hour talking about ways to improve productivity and to enhance our products’ market appeal. haha. That would be what our bosses would love to hear. Unfortunately for them, we only talk crap and make plans for the next outing. Well, in a sense, that’s productive too rite?

9.30am – Start serious work ( or rather pretend to do some serious work). Will get request occasionally to do testing at the lab, which may take the whole morning, depending on the situation.

12 pm – Lunch time! Will eat with the other trainees in the cafeteria usually, but sometimes go out to eat with colleagues in my team. Getting a bit sick of the cafeteria food, but oh well, it’s cheap and convenient.

1pm- After lunch, feel sleepy lor. Hahaha. But still have to do work. Or pretend to do work. Don’t ask me how to pretend. It’s an acquired skill, u know. But work is still work, need to get things done lar of coz.

3pm- Tea time! People must be thinking, you go office to work or to eat ah? Hahaa.. well actually I think I eat more meals when I work than when I study. Output needs input also right?? Cannot be productive when you’re hungry you know..

3.30pm- back to work, but this time will be thinking, how long more to 5.30pm ah?? Kekekeke..

5.30pm- CABUT!!

Last Friday, the trainee bunch of us went to sunshine square for pizza hut. They have a lunch set which goes for rm7.90 which is quite a good deal. Our typical Friday lunch will be an excursion to somewhere new to get a break from the café food we usually have. Making full use of the 2 hr lunch break of coz. No wonder Friday is the least productive day of the week.

I had to carpool home with my supervisor on Friday nite because my car pool buddy was on leave. We went for dinner at supertanker, where she introduced the famous duck rice there which was quite good. I had a second round of belacan fried rice too. Getting to like belacan fried rice quite a lot, hahaha.. ok I better get fat before the end of my training or else I dunno wat to say la..

Saturday, took bus to gurney plaza with my housemate, where we met the other trainees who were just finishing their red box session. After that we went for lunch at the food court. Then half of the group left leaving half of us there. We window shop and walk around aimlessly until about 6, then decided to catch a movie. Oh yeah, we also saw nicol david walking around probably shopping too. Hahaha.. ok then we ended up watching The Guardian. The story line is too predictable, the only consolation there is kate beckinsale. After movie, we went for supper/dinner before gb drive us home. It was funny when he was dropping cat off, her mango from the tree fell onto the roof of his car while he was waiting for her to get into the house, leaving a small dent on the roof. What luck!

Well, that’s half my weekend gone.. enjoyed the day at gurney a lot though. Now I’ve got to figure out a way to get these annoying insects out of my room. arghhh

happy new year
A new year once more, how much of a new beginning is it? I wonder how things would unfold this year.. Definitely it will be a most critical year, one that holds so much in the balance...

Side note, I went to KL over the 4 day weekend. In the beginning, mum and sis actually wanted to come to Penang but since I had a colleague who’s driving down to KL, decided to go KL myself instead. Didn’t arrange any meet up, but got to bump into many familiar faces all the same. Hahaha.. one interesting one was a hot chick I noticed in Tesco..then I was looking at her for quite some time.. eventually I was lining up beside her at the cashier, and I called her name and she turned and was surprised to see me. Actually I knew her from high school, just couldn’t remember her the first moment I saw her coz obviously she’s become more mature looking, and shall I say hotter too.. hahaha.. anyways was nice to meet her after so many years.

Had countdown at One Utama which was not bad. Stupid thing is that they close the sliding doors on the shopping complex after the countdown. How are we supposed to get our cars parked in there?? Stupid people..

4 days passed by really fast and it was time to get back to the grind of working. Coming back last nite, it was fortunate that mum and sis didn’t come becoz the way back to KL was jammed from Ipoh toll to KL.. man… I’ve never seen such a massive jam on the highway before..simply crazy..

Have a good year people.
